Brief History

In 1982, Richard Slater started installing carpet in Florida at the age of 15, helping at his Uncle’s store. He continued installing carpet for over 20 years, moving after awhile back to Jasper, GA. where he had grown

In 1992, he started working for himself, showing carpet samples out of the trunk of his car. As work started picking up, and customers were showing interest in getting not only carpet, but hardwood, vinyl, and tile as well, he opened his first store.

In 1998 Richard opened the doors of ‘Slater Floor Covering’, then located on Mark Whitfield Street, Jasper. Richard employed not only his wife, but his two daughters as well, starting his family owned, and operated, business. All was great for the 6 years that Richard and his family worked at this location. But, again, the amount of Richard’s customers grew, and their desire for a different variety of work grew with them.

To please his customers, Richard moved his store to a new, and bigger, location in 2004. This new location is the one you know, and love, here at 501 Hood Road in Jasper (in the big red barn!). Richard has also kept this a family owned store, his daughters still help out around the store, and his two secretaries, Jamie and Amy are considered family by all who know them. He has also employed both of his son-in-laws, Dustin installes hardwood flooring and John does the drywall work and painting. Richard also changed the name of the store from ‘Slater Floor Covering’ to ‘Slater Floors & Design Center’.  This change was done so that everyone would know that we now offer everything needed to make this your “one-stop-shop” for all your interior needs.
